President Bola Tinubu has officially launched the construction of Section 1 (118.85 km) of the Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Nasarawa–Abuja Superhighway. The groundbreaking ceremony was held at Amuro Primary School in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, with Governor Francis Nwifuru representing the President.
In his message, Tinubu expressed appreciation to the Southeast for their support and assured the people of continued improvements under his leadership. He also pledged that the highway would be delivered promptly and according to standards.
Governor Nwifuru described the project as a transformative one, vital to the aspirations of the Ebonyi people. He thanked the President for advancing his “Renewed Hope Agenda” and emphasized that the road would greatly improve the state’s connectivity, reduce transportation costs, and boost agriculture, trade, education, and employment.
He stated that as a landlocked state rich in resources, Ebonyi has long suffered from poor access to other regions, which this project aims to fix. He called the road a “game-changer” that signifies a shift from neglect to progress and inclusion.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, highlighted Tinubu’s inclusive leadership, noting that the President’s infrastructure projects span all regions. Umahi pointed out that this project marks a shift in how the federal government treats the Southeast, praising Tinubu as the first President to appoint a Southeasterner as Minister of Works.
Umahi urged regional unity and support for Tinubu’s administration, hinting at a possible second term. He noted that Ebonyi had previously seen little federal presence but is now witnessing meaningful development.
Senators Pius Anyim and Azu Agboti echoed appreciation for Tinubu’s efforts in the Southeast, pledging continued support. Anyim called the inclusion of Ebonyi in the highway project “historic” and urged the region to strengthen its relationship with the federal government.
Presidential aide Chioma Nweze added that Tinubu’s nationwide infrastructure drive is fostering unity, affirming that the Southeast stands firmly behind him.
Permanent Secretary Olufumsho Adebiyi noted that the project will enhance trade, agriculture, and job creation. He urged community cooperation for successful execution.
Engineer Bede Obiora, representing the contractor, assured that the 123km stretch in Ebonyi—spanning from Ndibe Beach in Afikpo to Mbeke Ishieke—will be built to specification using reinforced concrete pavement and will connect several communities across the state.
