Tinubu Reaffirms Support for $25bn Nigeria–Morocco Gas Pipeline, Says Akpabio.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains dedicated to advancing the \$25 billion Nigeria–Morocco gas pipeline project, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has confirmed.
Speaking on Akpabio’s behalf at an Executive Session of the African Parliament in Casablanca, Morocco, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC, Ondo South), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, emphasized Tinubu’s commitment to reviving major infrastructure projects across the country, with the pipeline identified as a top priority.
The planned 5,660-kilometer pipeline is expected to transport up to 30 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually. It will pass through 13 countries: Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco.
Senator Ibrahim highlighted the project’s potential to create jobs, drive industrial and digital growth, and improve energy security throughout Africa. He noted that Morocco would play a central role, particularly in facilitating gas exports to Europe.
In a call for deeper bilateral cooperation, Ibrahim urged the Moroccan government to introduce visa-free access for Nigerians to support trade, investment, and regional mobility linked to the pipeline.
Although the project is currently in the feasibility and planning stages, delays have pushed the expected investment decision from 2023 to 2025.
He added that Senator Akpabio is working with President Tinubu to secure the necessary legislative support to eliminate red tape and ensure the project moves forward.
This is more than just a pipeline,” Ibrahim stated. “It represents a vision of economic integration, collaboration, and a shared future for Africa’s energy landscape.”
