Tinubu Will Pick 2027 Running Mate After APC Convention – Onanuga.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has clarified that the president will choose his running
mate for the 2027 election only after the All Progressives Congress (APC) holds its next convention.
This clarification comes amid speculation that Vice President Kashim Shettima may be replaced, especially after Shettima’s name was omitted during President Tinubu’s endorsement at a recent APC stakeholders’ event in Gombe. The omission sparked disruption as some delegates protested the oversight.
In response, Onanuga said,such speculation is premature and unfounded, pointing out that the process follows a standard timeline: the presidential candidate is nominated first, then the running mate is chosen.
“That’s how it worked with Buhari,” Onanuga explained. “Once the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) releases the timetable and the convention is held, if Tinubu is nominated again, he will pick his running mate.”
Onanuga also dismissed rumours of a falling out between President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima. He described such claims as mere gossip, saying there is no evidence of any rift.
“To the best of my knowledge, they have an excellent working relationship,” he said. “Claims like ‘Seyi Tinubu is vice president’ are absurd. These are typical rumours that often surround deputies in Nigerian politics.”
Addressing concerns about Tinubu’s past tensions with his former deputies during his time as Lagos governor, Onanuga noted that those situations were influenced by specific political contexts, not a pattern of discarding deputies.
“Yes, there were issues. His first deputy, Kofo Bucknor-Akerele, left due to disagreements. Femi Pedro replaced her but later left when he wanted to run for governor,” he explained. “Those were isolated political decisions, not a sign of a consistent trend.”
