Trump Announces Immediate Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire Talks After Call With Putin.

U.S. President claims breakthrough in Ukraine war after two-hour phone conversation with Russian leader.

President Donald Trump has announced that Russia and Ukraine will begin ceasefire negotiations “immediately” following a nearly two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The conversation, confirmed by U.S. officials and Russian news agency TASS, marks the third direct exchange between the two leaders since Trump began his second term in January.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump described the call as having a “positive” tone and expressed confidence in the potential for peace.

Only Russia and Ukraine know the full details necessary for these negotiations. But I believe both can benefit greatly—especially economically—once this disastrous conflict ends,” Trump said.

He emphasized that both nations stand to gain from renewed trade with the U.S., framing economic recovery as a key incentive for ending the war. Trump also stated that Ukraine could see substantial benefits through future trade partnerships.

While Trump was optimistic, Putin’s remarks were more reserved. He described the conversation as “frank and substantive” and reaffirmed Russia’s willingness to pursue a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The U.S. president shared his views on ending hostilities, and I reaffirmed Russia’s support for a peaceful outcome. We now need to determine the most effective path forward,” Putin said during a press briefing.

Putin also acknowledged Trump’s role in helping restart direct dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv.

Despite the hopeful tone, no specific timelines or terms for the ceasefire were disclosed. While Trump spoke of negotiations beginning “immediately,” Putin’s comments reflected a more cautious stance, referring only to a potential memorandum outlining future peace efforts.

Trump also stated that he had already briefed several international leaders about the call, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

In a symbolic development, Trump claimed the Vatican, with Pope Francis’ backing, had offered to host the negotiations—an offer that could add diplomatic and moral weight to the peace process.

This development comes amid shifting dynamics in U.S.-Russia relations during Trump’s second term. Although he previously vowed to end the war within 24 hours of taking office, his stance has varied. Earlier this year, he threatened trade penalties against nations buying Russian oil and publicly criticized Putin over attacks on Zelenskyy.

Monday’s call may represent a renewed push by Trump to position himself as a key mediator in the conflict, with hopes of brokering a deal that could define his legacy in foreign policy.
