Two Lawmakers Defect to APC from PDP, Labour Party.

In a fresh political realignment at the National Assembly, two federal lawmakers have officially left their respective parties to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement wa

s made during Tuesday’s plenary session in the House of Representatives.

Peter Akpanke, who represents Obanliku/Obudu/Bekwarra Federal Constituency in Cross River State, exited the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Professor Paul Nnamchi, representing Enugu East/Isi Uzo Federal Constituency, also left the Labour Party (LP). Both lawmakers cited unresolved internal crises within their parties as the reason for their defection.

Their letters of defection were read by House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, marking their official move to the APC.

Akpanke expressed appreciation to the PDP for the platform it provided him but noted that the party’s prolonged internal conflicts made his continued membership untenable. “The absence of peace in the PDP has left me no choice but to find a more stable platform to serve my constituents,” he said.

Nnamchi also attributed his decision to the persistent leadership issues in the Labour Party, which he said had affected the party’s cohesion and direction.

These defections come amid a broader wave of political shifts ahead of the 2027 general elections, as lawmakers and political figures reposition themselves across party lines.
