Ukraine Reports New Wave of Russian Drone Attacks Following End of Easter Truce.
Ukraine’s military has reported renewed Russian drone and missile attacks across several regions just hours after a 30-hour “Easter truce” declared by Moscow came to an end.
Air raid alerts were issued overnight in regions including Kyiv, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, Mykolaiv, and Zaporizhzhia. In Mykolaiv, explosions were reported, but no casualties or damage were immediately confirmed.
The Russian military has not officially responded to the reports. The temporary ceasefire, announced by President Vladimir Putin, ended at midnight on Sunday (Moscow time). Both Ukraine and Russia accused each other of violating the truce.
Residents in several cities, including Kyiv, were urged early Monday to take shelter due to the threat of drone strikes. Ukrainian officials reported active Russian aircraft movements in the northeast and east, and missile activity in Mykolaiv.
Ahead of the truce’s expiration, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Putin had not extended the ceasefire. Ukraine later claimed there were nearly 1,900 Russian attacks during the truce period, many involving heavy weapons, particularly around the contested city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk.
President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the truce as a public relations move by Russia, stating it created a false impression of peace. He called for a minimum 30-day halt to strikes on civilian infrastructure and reiterated that any Ukrainian military response would mirror Russian aggression.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defence insisted its forces honored the ceasefire, while accusing Ukraine of using US-supplied Himars missiles during the truce.
Despite the renewed fighting, diplomatic discussions are reportedly ongoing. A US State Department spokesperson reaffirmed America’s commitment to achieving a full ceasefire, emphasizing the need to end the ongoing destruction.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, it has seized around 20% of Ukraine’s territory. The conflict has resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties across both sides.
