UN Condemns Benue Killings, Urges Nigerian Government to Arrest Perpetrators.
The United Nations has strongly condemned the ongoing violence in Benue State, calling
on the Nigerian government to bring those responsible to justice. The statement comes amid growing national and international concern over continued attacks and the government’s perceived inability to stop them.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, through his Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, confirmed that the organization is closely monitoring the situation. “The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians, including in Nigeria, and we hope those responsible for this violence will be found and apprehended,” Haq stated.
Amnesty International also expressed alarm over the deteriorating security in the region. Following a recent attack in Yelewata, where more than 100 people were killed, the organization criticized the government’s security efforts as ineffective. “The Nigerian authorities must immediately end the near-daily bloodshed in Benue and ensure the perpetrators face justice,” Amnesty said.
During the Yelewata assault, three security personnel were killed and 16 others injured. This incident follows a pattern of escalating violence. On June 10, three young men were killed in Apa Local Government Area, and another person was murdered in Agatu LGA.
Governor Hyacinth Alia described the situation as a targeted and coordinated assault on the state. Speaking on national television, he warned that intelligence reports indicate that up to 65% of recent threats were confirmed as real, and that the state is battling organized acts of terror not mere communal clashes.
A report by SBM Intelligence revealed that over 2,000 Nigerians were killed in the first quarter of 2025, including 101 in Benue alone. The same period saw the deaths of 136 security personnel nationwide.
In response to public pressure, President Bola Tinubu is set to visit Benue on Wednesday, June 18, to assess the crisis. According to his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu has postponed a scheduled trip to Kaduna in order to meet with stakeholders in Benue.
The President’s visit will include meetings with traditional leaders, community representatives, and security officials. In advance of the trip, he has already sent high-level government and security officials including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Inspector General of Police, intelligence agency heads, and top lawmakers to the state.
The visit aims to explore long-term solutions to the ongoing violence and to demonstrate the federal government’s commitment to restoring peace in the region.
