UN Report: 138 Million Children in Child Labour, 54 Million in Dangerous Work.

A joint report by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and UNICE

F reveals that nearly 138 million children worldwide were involved in child labour in 2024, with 54 million engaged in hazardous work that poses serious risks to their health and development.

Released ahead of World Day Against Child Labour (June 12) and the International Day of Play (June 11), the report highlights that while child labour has decreased by over 20 million since 2020, global efforts remain insufficient to meet the 2025 goal of eliminating child labour entirely.

Although child labour has been nearly halved since 2000, the report warns that current progress is far too slow. To achieve full eradication within five years, the pace of change would need to be accelerated elevenfold.

Encouragingly, the feared increase in child labour following the COVID-19 pandemic did not occur. The number of child labourers has dropped from 160 million in 2020 to 138 million in 2024—despite a global increase in the child population by 230 million since 2000. Over 100 million fewer children are working today compared to the turn of the century.

The report attributes this progress to effective policies that should be maintained and expanded. These include:

Providing free, high-quality education as a viable alternative to child labour.
Strengthening school-to-work transitions, especially for older teens exposed to workplace hazards.
Enforcing legal protections that align with international standards to prevent and penalize child labour.

It also stresses that eliminating child labour requires integrating these strategies into broader economic and social policies, including national development plans, labour reforms, and sector-specific programs.

The figures show both the scale of the problem and the potential for progress,” the report concludes. “With the right policies, proper funding, and strong commitment, ending child labour is within reach.
