UN Urges Calm Following Deadly Protests in Kenya.
The United Nations has called for restraint following deadly anti-government protests in Kenya earlier this week. The demonstrations, which took place on Wedn
esday, marked one year since the 2024 protests against tax hikes that resulted in the deaths of over 60 people and numerous reports of abductions by security forces.
This year’s protests turned violent, with unofficial death tolls ranging between eight and sixteen. Over 400 people were injured, including police officers. Tensions were already high before the protests, following the recent death of 31-year-old blogger Albert Ojwan while in police custody.
Demonstrators reportedly attacked government buildings, police stations, and businesses in Nairobi, chanting slogans calling for the occupation of the presidential residence. Several buildings were looted and set ablaze.
In response, the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) released a statement expressing deep concern over reports that security forces used live ammunition against protesters. The office emphasized that under international law, lethal force should only be used when strictly necessary to protect lives or prevent serious harm.
The OHCHR welcomed Kenya’s decision to have its Independent Policing Oversight Authority investigate the violence and urged authorities to ensure the inquiry is thorough, impartial, and transparent. The office also called for calm and encouraged all sides to avoid further violence.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, during a press briefing in New York, echoed these sentiments. He expressed sadness over the loss of life and reiterated the importance of accountability and restraint.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen accused protesters of trying to carry out an unconstitutional attempt to change the government. He reported that nine police stations were attacked, dozens of vehicles were destroyed, and five firearms were stolen during the unrest.
The UN continues to monitor the situation closely as calls for justice and de-escalation grow both locally and internationally.
