US Court Blocks Trump’s Tariffs, Raising Questions on Trade Policies.
A US federal court has ruled that former President Donald Tru
mp’s use of emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs earlier this year is unlawful. The decision challenges the legality of tariffs announced on April 2 under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which Trump used to justify broad tariffs and specific levies on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. The White House has appealed the ruling.
The US Court of International Trade found that the economic concerns cited by the administration did not qualify as the “unusual and extraordinary threats” required to invoke IEEPA. The tariffs in question include a 10% global tariff and country-specific taxes, which were temporarily paused for trade negotiations.
While these tariffs must be removed within 10 days to comply with the ruling, other tariffs on steel, aluminum, and cars imposed under a separate law remain in effect.
The ruling adds uncertainty to ongoing trade talks with China, the EU, Japan, and India, potentially weakening the US negotiating position. However, the White House has other legal avenues to impose tariffs, though these processes are typically slower.
This court decision poses a significant setback for Trump’s trade agenda, which relied heavily on rapid tariff implementation, and comes amid concerns about rising federal debt linked to recent tax cuts.
The appeal could eventually reach the Supreme Court, leaving the future of Trump’s tariff strategy uncertain for now.
