What Atiku’s Alleged VP Offer Could Mean for Peter Obi’s Presidential Ambitions.

A recent report suggesting that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has offered Peter Obi the position of running mate for the 2027 presidential election has sparked considerable political debate.

If true, the offer could mark a strategic shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics, particularly among younger voters looking for an alternative to the current leadership. Speculation suggests Atiku, who will be in his 80s by 2027, might serve only one term and support Obi’s succession.

This development could reshape both opposition strategy and Obi’s own political path. Atiku and Obi previously ran together in 2019 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but lost to President Muhammadu Buhari. In 2023, they ran separately—Atiku under PDP and Obi under the Labour Party (LP)—and both lost to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite finishing third, Obi’s performance was a surprise, winning in key states including Lagos and Abuja.

As 2027 approaches, Atiku is pushing for a renewed alliance. Obi’s strong support base among young Nigerians could boost Atiku’s credibility. With President Tinubu likely to seek re-election, a joint ticket could offer the opposition its best shot.

   Obi’s Dilemma

Accepting a VP role may be politically difficult for Obi. His 2023 campaign was built on rejecting the establishment, which Atiku represents. Aligning with him could be seen as a compromise of Obi’s values and a setback after outperforming Atiku in several states.

Obi has emphasized that his ambition is to lead with integrity and reform. Joining Atiku might alienate his core supporters, especially given that any promise of future succession is not legally enforceable.

  Reactions from Supporters

Obi’s support base, especially the youth-driven “Obidient Movement,” has rejected any suggestion of him serving under Atiku. On May 19, the group dismissed the reports as false. Prominent supporter Babatunde Gbadamosi stated he would not back any ticket where Obi isn’t the presidential candidate and Datti Baba-Ahmed isn’t the VP.

Their reaction highlights a desire not just to defeat the ruling party, but to transform Nigeria’s political system entirely.

  Atiku’s Final Attempt?

For Atiku, this reported offer could be a last effort to win the presidency after multiple unsuccessful attempts. Though still influential within the PDP, the party remains weakened after its 2023 defeat.

A partnership with Obi could revitalize Atiku’s appeal and present a stronger challenge to the APC. However, it depends on Obi’s willingness to risk his independent political identity for a secondary role with uncertain long-term gains.

   What’s Next for Obi?

Obi faces a crucial decision: accept a VP role that may bring short-term influence but risks his credibility, or continue independently, potentially isolating himself from mainstream politics but preserving his reformist image.

As of now, the alliance remains speculative. Until Obi takes a clear stance, the future of the 2027 presidential race remains open.
