WhatsApp Pulls the Plug: Phones Losing Support Starting May 2025

If you’re still using an older smartphone, you might soon need to bid farewell to WhatsApp.

Beginning May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer function on certain outdated phones, as the app updates to maintain compatibility only with newer operating systems.

According to Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, these changes are part of routine updates designed to keep the app secure and efficient across modern devices.

Although this update won’t impact the majority of users, people using smartphones that are over 10 years old could be affected.

Only a small group of users still using such old phones will need to take action. If you’re unsure, now is a good time to check if your phone is listed below.

iPhones That Will No Longer Be Supported:

Devices running iOS versions earlier than 15.1

iPhone 5s

iPhone 6

iPhone 6 Plus

These models can only be updated to iOS 12.5.7, which no longer meets WhatsApp’s minimum requirements. These iPhones were released between 2013 and 2014.

Android Devices Affected (as of January 1, 2025):
Support for devices running Android KitKat and earlier versions ended at the start of 2025.

While some KitKat phones may work if updated, many no longer receive updates from their manufacturers, making them incompatible.

What You Should Do If Your Phone Is Affected:

1. Backup Your WhatsApp Chats
Save your conversations via Google Drive (for Android) or iCloud (for iPhone) so you can restore them later.

2. Look for Software Updates
Your phone might still be eligible for a system update. Check in your settings. If an update is available, install it to keep WhatsApp running.

3. Consider Getting a New Phone
If updates are no longer possible, you may need to upgrade to a newer device. There are plenty of affordable smartphones that support the latest WhatsApp version. It might be tough to let go, but you’ll stay connected.
