Why ECOWAS Is Celebrating Its 50th Anniversary in Lagos – Tuggar.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has explained why Lagos was chosen as the venue for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Speaking in Abuja, Tuggar noted that Lagos is symbolic as it was where the ECOWAS treaty was signed in 1975. He emphasized the region’s achievements over the past five decades, despite recent challenges, including the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the bloc.

The celebration will include the presence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other West African leaders. Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), the only surviving founding father of ECOWAS, is also expected to attend.

Events will begin at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs on Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island—where ECOWAS was originally established—and will later move to Eko Hotel and Suites. Activities will feature panel discussions and a youth forum.

Tuggar highlighted that the event is meant to reaffirm member nations’ commitment to ECOWAS and showcase its achievements, which have been overshadowed by recent political disruptions within the region.
