Why Real Madrid Chose Not to Renew Luka Modric’s Contract.

Luka Modric’s departure from Real Madrid marks the end of a historic chapter at the club. While many hoped he would stay on for another season, a recent report from *AS* reveals the reasons behind the club’s decision to let him go.

Despite internal support for keeping Modric, the club’s leadership ultimately agreed it was time to move forward. Real Madrid is undergoing a generational shift in midfield and believes this transition must happen without Modric’s presence.

The club is focused on promoting younger talents, particularly Arda Güler and Nico Paz, while also working to sign a major midfield player this summer. The goal is to build a new core for the future, just as Modric, Toni Kroos, and Casemiro did in the past.

Although Modric was open to taking on a reduced role and mentoring younger players, the club decided that even a limited presence might hinder the development of its emerging stars. As summer approached and no offer was made, Modric sought clarity. He was informed of the club’s final decision on Thursday morning and accepted it professionally.

He will say farewell to the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday after 13 years of service.

Modric Confirms Departure, Eyes New Chapter

Following the announcement, Modric confirmed his exit in an emotional social media message. At 39, he ends his Real Madrid journey as the most decorated player in the club’s history, with 28 titles, including six Champions League and four La Liga trophies.

According to journalist Jorge Picon, Modric had hoped for one more season, but after meeting with club president Florentino Pérez, it became clear that his time in Madrid had come to an end. Still, his career is not over.

He has received offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia and the United States. With the 2026 World Cup in sight, Modric remains committed to staying fit and competitive, aiming to finish his career with the Croatian national team on the world stage.

Depending on his next move, he could still add one more trophy — the revamped FIFA Club World Cup — to his record, potentially leaving Madrid with an unprecedented 29 titles.
