Wike Criticizes Opposition Coalition, Says Only PDP Can Challenge Tinubu in 2027.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed efforts by political coalitions opposing President Bola Tinubu, asserting that only the P

eoples Democratic Party (PDP) has the potential to challenge him in the 2027 elections—provided the party is properly organized.

Speaking during his monthly press briefing in Abuja, Wike accused members of the coalition of exploiting public discontent and failing to acknowledge their own past shortcomings while in power.

He questioned the narrative that Nigerians are now angry, pointing out that many of those leading the opposition once held significant government positions but failed to deliver tangible results.

Wike cited examples such as former Senate President David Mark, former Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and former governors like Seriake Dickson and Aminu Tambuwal, suggesting that Nigerians were not portrayed as “angry” during their time in office—despite unmet expectations.

He argued that criticism of the current administration should come from individuals who have not previously held power, rather than from those who were part of the system that contributed to the country’s problems.

“If people who haven’t been in government speak about change, I can respect that,” Wike said. “But not those who were in charge for years and did little. President Tinubu has made difficult but necessary decisions. Without those actions, the country could be in a worse state today.”

Wike emphasized that although challenges remain, the government is making progress—highlighting increased state revenue and infrastructure development in the FCT—as signs of positive change.

He also commented on the current state of the opposition, saying it had weakened itself through internal divisions and lacked a unified vision. According to him, only the PDP could pose a credible threat to Tinubu’s re-election—if it could reorganize effectively.

Wike further criticized voters for repeatedly electing the same individuals based on ethnic and religious affiliations instead of track records and merit.

“You, the voters, have the power,” he said. “But instead of voting based on what a candidate has done or stands for, many still vote based on religion or ethnicity. That’s the real issue.”
