Wike Responds to Amaechi’s “I’m Hungry” Remark: “He’s Hungry for Power, Not Food”.

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has sharply criticized former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi following his recent comment about being “hungry.”

Amaechi had made the sta

tement while discussing Nigeria’s economic challenges during an event held to celebrate his 60th birthday. He remarked, *“We’re all hungry. If you’re not, I am. If we, in the opposition, want to remove the man in power, we can.

In a pointed response during a media briefing on Monday, Wike dismissed Amaechi’s comments as misleading and politically motivated.

Why would someone use their 60th birthday to tell Nigerians lies?” Wike asked.   This is a man who’s been in power continuously from 1999 to 2023 — Speaker, Governor, Minister. He never complained about hunger during those years.”

Wike accused Amaechi of being “hungry for power,” not food, and suggested that such statements reveal a failure in leadership. He also questioned Amaechi’s political track record, noting that he was unable to secure 25% of the vote for Muhammadu Buhari in Rivers State during the 2019 election, despite serving as the campaign’s Director-General.

Now he’s talking about removing a sitting president. How? Through a military coup? Is that what he means?” Wike asked. “This kind of rhetoric is dangerous and irresponsible.

Wike also reaffirmed his own political standing, stating that he remains an “asset” to the current administration and to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election prospects.

I may not be liked by everyone, but I’m not a liability. I’m an asset to ensuring that President Tinubu wins a second term,” he said.

He further challenged Amaechi to build influence in his home state first before speaking about changing leadership at the national level.
