Wike Speaks on 2027 Elections, PDP Crisis, Amaechi, and Rift with Fubara.
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has spoken candidly about the ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the upcoming 2027 presidential election, his feud with Siminalayi Fubara, and recent comments by Rotimi Amaechi.
Appearing on a televised interview in Abuja, Wike pledged full support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election and declared his intention to lead the campaign in Rivers State.
“I am not a liability. I am an asset. I will ensure that President Tinubu wins a second term, and I will lead the campaign in Rivers,” Wike said.
On the PDP and Accusations of Anti-party Conduct
Wike dismissed accusations from PDP stalwart Chief Bode George, who criticized his actions and claimed he undermined the party. Wike defended his track record, saying he helped build the PDP into a national force and delivered electoral victories in Rivers State in 2023.
He clarified that his refusal to support Atiku Abubakar during the last election stemmed from a principled stand on regional equity, noting that both the presidential candidate and the party chairman were from the North.
The PDP didn’t lose because of me. In Rivers, PDP won across the board. If I was anti-party, how did that happen?” he asked.
Wike also responded to reports that the PDP’s Abuja secretariat was sealed due to unpaid rent. He said neither he nor the PDP could pay the fees, as the building is not legally registered under their names.
On Amaechi’s ‘Hunger’ Statement
Wike criticized his predecessor Rotimi Amaechi, who recently said, “We’re all hungry… If you’re not, I am.” According to Wike, the comment was less about economic hardship and more about desperation for political relevance.
Amaechi isn’t hungry for food—he’s hungry for power,” Wike stated. “He was in power from 1999 to 2023, and never once mentioned hunger. Now, out of office for two years, suddenly he’s hungry?”
He also condemned Amaechi’s remarks about removing the President, calling them undemocratic and akin to promoting dictatorship.
On the Breakdown with Fubara
Wike expressed emotional disappointment over his rift with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who was suspended amid political tensions in Rivers State. He likened the situation to being betrayed by one’s own child.
“Sometimes I watch videos of what he said about me… and I cry,” Wike admitted. “He was given everything, and yet turned against those who helped him.”
Though he emphasized his willingness to reconcile, Wike insisted that any peace must be genuine and not politically motivated.
On Abuja Land Reforms and Accountability
Turning to his work in the FCT, Wike defended the recent revocation of over 5,000 land titles due to unpaid ground rent. He noted that many of the properties belong to political elites who had avoided payment for up to 40 years.
“I take joy in stepping on the toes of powerful people who think they’re untouchable,” Wike said. “FCT is now working because we are doing what others didn’t have the courage to do.”
He added that even Bode George’s name appeared on the list of defaulters, reinforcing his point that **no one is above the law.
Conclusion
Wike’s remarks offer a revealing glimpse into Nigeria’s shifting political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. While defending his controversial stances, he reaffirmed his loyalty to the Tinubu administration and made it clear that he will remain a central player—both in Abuja and back home in Rivers State.
