World Environment Day: NES Urges Ogun Residents to Reduce Plastic Waste.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Environmental Society (NES) in Abeokuta, Alhaji Badmus Jamiu, has urged residents of Ogun State to take urgent action against plastic

pollution to help create a cleaner and healthier environment.

In a statement marking the 2025 World Environment Day, themed *”Putting An End to Plastic Pollution,”* Jamiu acknowledged the usefulness of plastic in everyday life and its role in many livelihoods. However, he warned that its environmental impact is severe, as plastic waste does not decompose easily and poses long-term threats.

He highlighted the risk plastic pollution presents to aquatic life, which can ultimately affect human health. Jamiu praised the Ogun State Government’s Blue Box Programme as a step in the right direction and encouraged residents to participate in such initiatives.

He emphasized the importance of separating plastic waste from general refuse for recycling purposes, instead of discarding it indiscriminately.

Jamiu also called for stronger enforcement of environmental policies and urged government agencies to increase public education efforts about proper waste management across both urban and rural areas. He concluded by wishing residents a peaceful World Environment Day celebration.
