Yoruba Council Urges Unified Youth Leadership to Address Insecurity in Nigeria.
The Yoruba Council Worldwide (YCW) has called for the establishment of a unified and collaborative youth leadership across Nigeria’s regions to address the growing security threats facing indige
nous communities.
During its inaugural Yoruba Youth National Stakeholders Meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State, YCW President Aare Oladotun Hassan stressed the importance of a coordinated youth-led security approach. He urged regional youth leaders to work together on the ground to improve safety and protect lives and property.
“This unity is vital in responding effectively to our collective security concerns,” Hassan said.
The Council’s National Coordinator, Alawode Rahman Akintunde, emphasized in a communiqué the need for urgent reforms in the country’s security structure. The group advocated for swift passage of the Joint Regional Security Network Bill, which would formally integrate local security outfits into Nigeria’s national framework.
“This is necessary to strengthen the protection of indigenous communities and enhance national stability,” the statement read.
In addition to security, the Council highlighted economic issues such as youth unemployment and poverty, describing them as major threats to the Yoruba region’s future. The group expressed readiness to work with federal and state governments to tackle these root causes.
To increase youth engagement in governance, the Council also announced plans to establish a visionary leadership group that will advocate for innovative, community-driven policies. Sunday Adebowale was appointed as the Chairman of the Yoruba Youths Think-Tank, a new body tasked with generating practical solutions to long-standing challenges.
“This initiative will help us embrace progress and leave behind ineffective approaches,” the Council noted.
The communiqué also urged Yoruba traditional leaders to set aside differences and foster unity among themselves for the benefit of the region.
“We must not let internal divisions weaken our shared identity,” it stated.
In closing, the Yoruba Council reaffirmed its dedication to promoting peace, unity, and democratic engagement. It also pledged to collaborate with other indigenous groups both within Nigeria and abroad to support development and mutual progress.
